October Brain Candy: The “Behaving Badly” Edition

Discussion is the glue that holds us all together and Moxy is no different. Once a month, three of your favorite Moxilicious girls get together to discuss pop culture, politics, and the word on the street.

In October’s episode we discuss the Amanda Todd teenage suicide due to bullying and blackmail, Disney’s mixed message about a Latina princess and what happens when a teacher doesn’t read the fine print.

The Background

Topic 1: Amanda Todd, 15, posted the YouTube video “My Story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self harm,” on September 7th relating her story, approximately a month before she committed suicide. In seventh grade she used her webcam to meet new people online and was convinced to flash the cam — later, the man she’d flashed blackmailed her to try to get her to do more and she turned him down. Before she knew it, everyone had seen the photo and she was the target of endless bullying.

Topic 2: Initially the producer of a new Disney TV series revealed that the Princess at its center was Latina — only for Disney to later retract the statement, explaining that the Princess was never intended to be Latina and instead, while based on our world, was pure fairy tale. Should Disney try to create Princesses that represent a wide variety of little girls? And is it offensive that they first created a Latina character and later denied it?

Topic 3: Domestic violence is never funny. Unfortunately, no one told that to a group of students at Waverly High School in upstate New York. A trio of white male students reenacted Chris Brown beating Rihanna at a high school homecoming pep rally as part of an annual school popularity contest. They meant it to be funny. Kim says it was an epic fail — but sexist? Racist? The ladies debate it.
